The Reverse Route: Sail Komodo to Lombok

The Komodo to Lombok passage traces the same arc as its reverse — through the volcanic Lesser Sunda chain — but runs west into the prevailing wind rather than with it. The journey takes 3–5 days by phinisi, covering Flores, Sumbawa, and Moyo Island before arriving in Lombok. It is a less commonly booked route than the eastward passage, which means more solitude at anchorages and a different perspective on the same extraordinary coastline.

The practical logic is straightforward: fly into Labuan Bajo, sail the passage to Lombok, fly home from Lombok International Airport (LOP). Each day moves you through new water. Nothing is retraced.

Flying Into Labuan Bajo

Komodo Airport (LBJ) connects to major Indonesian hubs and regional international routes:

  • Bali (DPS → LBJ): ~1.5 hours, multiple daily departures on Garuda, Citilink, and Lion Air. The standard starting point for most international travelers
  • Jakarta (CGK → LBJ): ~2 hours direct
  • Singapore (SIN → LBJ): Direct services via regional carriers; confirm schedule at time of booking
  • Kuala Lumpur (KUL → LBJ): Direct service available seasonally

Book the earliest available flight into Labuan Bajo. Morning arrivals allow same-day embarkation and a first evening at anchor in the Komodo approaches before the westward passage begins.

Journey Highlights: East to West

Komodo and Rinca Islands (Days 1–2) The opening days of the westward route include the park's signature sites — Padar Island's three-bay viewpoint, Pink Beach, and Manta Point — before the boat clears the national park boundary and the coastline becomes progressively wilder. This is the densest part of the itinerary; subsequent days carry a slower, more exploratory character.

Flores coast Exiting Komodo National Park westward, the boat passes along Flores' northern coast. The Flores channel islands — dozens of small outcrops between the mainland and open sea — offer sheltered overnight anchorages and, in clear conditions, some of the best sunset light of the journey.

Moyo Island (Pulau Moyo) Moyo is a protected nature reserve off Sumbawa's north coast, largely untouched by commercial tourism. Its defining features are a freshwater waterfall accessible by a short jungle walk from the beach, and some of the best reef snorkeling in the Lesser Sunda region. The famous Amanwana resort sits on the island's west shore — visible from the water, but the surrounding marine protected area is open to charter guests.

Sumbawa volcanic coast The Sumbawa crossing presents the most dramatic inland scenery of the route. Mount Tambora — responsible for the 1815 eruption that triggered a global "year without summer" — dominates the northern horizon as the boat passes through Bima Bay. The coastline here is essentially uninhabited, and overnight anchorages in small bays involve no other boats.

Our Fleet for This Route

Verified boats available for the Komodo to Lombok one-way passage are listed below. These vessels have confirmed capability for the westward crossing and arrival at Lombok harbor.

Arriving in Lombok: What Comes Next

Gili Islands The three Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, Gili Air — lie just off Lombok's northwest coast. Many guests on this route time their Lombok arrival to include a night or two on the Gilis before flying home. Gili Trawangan in particular has excellent dive operators and a well-developed accommodation infrastructure.

Mount Rinjani For those with extra days in Lombok, Rinjani (3,726m) is one of Indonesia's most rewarding volcano treks. The summit crater and its turquoise lake are accessible via a 2–3 day guided climb from Sembalun or Senaru. Book trekking guides in advance during peak season (July–August).

Flights out of Lombok Lombok International Airport (LOP) connects to Bali (30–40 minutes), Jakarta (~1.5 hours), Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur. For travelers continuing onward, the LOP–Bali route runs multiple times daily and connects into Bali's comprehensive international network.

Transfer from harbor to LOP: Approximately 45–60 minutes from northern Lombok embarkation points. Confirm transfer arrangements with your charter operator — most include disembarkation logistics as part of the package.
