  5. Best Time to Visit Komodo in 2026
KomodoExplorer Editorial TeamMarch 10, 2026

There is no single "best" time to visit Komodo National Park — the right window depends on whether you're optimising for underwater visibility, manta ray frequency, dragon activity, crowd levels, or sea conditions. This guide breaks down each factor month by month so you can match your travel dates to what matters most.

The Dry Season: April to November

The dry season runs broadly from April to November, when the southeast trade winds push dry air across the Lesser Sunda Islands. Conditions during this period are characterised by:

  • Clear skies and reduced rainfall
  • Calm to moderate seas — typically 0.5–1.5 metre swells in the main passages
  • Strong underwater visibility — 15–25 metres at most sites, occasionally exceeding 30 metres at exposed pinnacles
  • Lower humidity — more comfortable for deck time and hikes

This is the primary charter season. Most visitors and operators plan their trips within this window, and SiOra quota slots fill fastest during peak months (July–August).

Month-by-Month Breakdown

April–May

The transition from wet to dry season. Sea conditions improve steadily through April. Visibility climbs week by week. Fewer crowds than peak season. Excellent value window — conditions nearly match peak season at lower demand.

Manta rays are increasingly active. Komodo dragon sightings on Rinca and Komodo Island are consistent as temperatures rise and the animals become more diurnally active.

June

Consistently good conditions. Clear water. Trade winds establish fully. One of the most reliable months across all parameters — visibility, mantas, dragons, and manageable crowds. Arguably the single best month to visit if only one month could be chosen.

July–August

Peak season. Best average conditions of the year. Maximum manta ray activity at Manta Alley and Manta Point. Komodo dragons most visible during daylight hours. SiOra quotas at maximum demand — book at least 3–4 weeks ahead. Expect busier anchorages and more boats at popular sites.

September–October

Peak season recedes. Conditions remain excellent — comparable to June. Visibility is consistently strong. A recommended window for travellers who want high-season quality without high-season crowding. October marks the beginning of the transition back to wet season, though conditions typically remain good through the month.

November

The shoulder month. Conditions begin to deteriorate from mid-November onward as the wet season approaches. Early November remains viable. Fewer tourists. Good window for experienced travellers comfortable with slight uncertainty in conditions.

Manta Ray Season

Manta rays are present at Komodo National Park year-round, but encounter frequency and predictability peak during the dry season (April–November). The mechanism is simple: southeast trade winds drive upwelling that concentrates plankton, which concentrates mantas.

Key sites:

  • Manta Point (Karang Makassar): The most reliable aggregation site, located north of Komodo Island. Peak activity: April–November.
  • Manta Alley: A channel between Komodo and Rinca with strong current that aggregates mantas at cleaning stations. Consistent year-round, peak April–November.

Oceanic manta rays (Mobula birostris) are frequently encountered on crossing dives at sites like Crystal Rock and Batu Bolong throughout the main season.

Whale Shark Season: Saleh Bay, Sumbawa

Whale sharks at Saleh Bay are resident year-round — an anomaly explained by the fish farming operations in the bay whose effluent attracts the animals. This makes the Lombok→Komodo sailing route uniquely valuable: Saleh Bay can be included regardless of month.

For travellers making the full passage, whale shark encounters at Saleh Bay are achievable in any season, including the wet season months when Komodo itself is less favourable.

Wet Season: December to March

The northwest monsoon brings:

  • Increased rainfall — heavy afternoon showers common
  • Rougher sea conditions — swells of 2–3 metres in open passages
  • Reduced visibility — can drop to 5–8 metres at some sites after rainfall
  • Some site closures — certain exposed sites (Manta Alley, Crystal Rock) may be inaccessible during rough conditions

The wet season is not recommended for first-time visitors or those with fixed itineraries. Experienced divers and sailors comfortable with variable conditions can find exceptional experiences at specific sites — soft coral visibility in particular is often at its seasonal best during the wet season at sheltered bays.

Avoiding Crowds: The Practical Strategy

Peak season (July–August) brings the highest volume of visitors. To visit in peak season with reduced crowd exposure:

  1. Book a private charter rather than open trip — you control the itinerary and can access sites early or late when day-trip boats are absent
  2. Start early: Pre-dawn departures reach Padar Summit and Pink Beach before the first wave of day visitors
  3. Book SiOra early: Quota management means sites have defined daily limits — early booking guarantees your slot at preferred sites
  4. Consider May, June, or September: Near-identical conditions to peak season, significantly fewer boats at anchor

Conditions and regulations are reviewed seasonally. KomodoExplorer Indonesia recommends confirming current SiOra quota availability and site access with your operator at booking.
