In the dry season, guides report as many as a dozen or more mantas gliding through the plankton at dawn. • Vertical Walls Draped in Soft Coral: The pinnacle's walls drop steeply and are covered in soft corals, sponges, and Acropora colonies, with visibility that regularly exceeds 30 meters. • Pelagic Traffic: Strong currents attract barracuda, dogtooth tuna, giant trevally, reef sharks, and — on a lucky day — a passing hammerhead. Wobbegong carpet sharks rest in the reef's overhangs, and nudibranchs and pygmy seahorses reward divers who slow down for macro life. • A True Current Site: Batu Bolong's currents are part of the draw, not an inconvenience — they're what makes the site a fish magnet in the first place.

• Diving the Wall: The pinnacle drops from around 8 meters down to 30–45 meters, with a steep section reaching further still. Divers with an Advanced Open Water certification (Deep specialty recommended for the deeper wall) get the most out of the site, drifting past the cleaning station and along the coral-covered flanks. • Snorkeling the Shallows: Batu Bolong is also one of Komodo's best snorkel sites — sometimes nicknamed the "manta corridor" — with mantas often visible from the surface in the upper 8–15 meters. • Manta Watching at Dawn: Early morning (roughly 6:00–9:00 am) is prime time, when currents are lighter, the water is clearest, and mantas arrive to feed on the overnight plankton bloom. • Macro Photography: Between the pelagic action, patient divers can find pygmy seahorses and nudibranchs tucked into the coral — worth a macro lens if mantas aren't the only target.

The dry season (April–October) offers the calmest seas and clearest water, with manta sightings most reliable at dawn. Currents build through the morning, so operators generally aim for an early departure from Labuan Bajo. Outside the dry season, Batu Bolong can still be dived on sheltered days, but conditions are less predictable.

Batu Bolong lies a short sail north of Labuan Bajo, on the way toward Komodo and Rinca — typically under an hour by traditional Phinisi or speedboat. Most operators fold it into a day tour or as an early stop on a multi-day liveaboard, timing the crossing so the boat arrives while the current is still manageable. There is no land access; the site is boat-and-water only, with divers and snorkelers entering directly from the vessel.

• Respect the Current: This is a genuine drift site — follow your guide's positioning and never fight the current directly. • Keep Distance from Mantas: Maintain a respectful gap (roughly 3–5 meters) at the cleaning station; no touching, no chasing, no flash photography. • Match Your Certification to the Site: Shallow snorkeling is open to everyone, but the deeper wall is best left to Advanced Open Water divers, ideally with a Deep or drift specialty. • Book Ahead for the Dawn Window: The best manta activity is early; ask your charter to prioritize a sunrise or early-morning slot at Batu Bolong. • Protect the Reef: Use reef-safe sunscreen and avoid contact with the coral-draped walls — buoyancy control matters as much here as anywhere in the park.

Batu Bolong sits close enough to Labuan Bajo that it's included on day trips, but its full character shows on a multi-day Phinisi itinerary, where dive masters can time the visit to the calmest current window. It's a regular stop on 4-day-plus liveaboard routes alongside Castle Rock and Crystal Rock, and it remains one of the sites most associated with reliable manta encounters inside Komodo National Park.
