Visit during the dry season (April–October) when skies are clear and the hills glow golden. Early morning is best for calm seas and cooler air on the hike. The trail can be very crowded at dawn (especially in high season), so consider going on a weekday or slightly later to avoid crowds. Rainy months (Nov–Mar) bring rain and rough seas, which can make hiking slippery and boat rides choppy – it’s best to avoid those months.

The only way to reach Gili Lawa is by boat. It’s about 2–3 hours’ sail north from Labuan Bajo. Most visitors come on a liveaboard cruise or private charter. A day trip is possible but long (a very early sunrise start is required). Boats typically drop anchor in a bay, where you can either snorkel first or hike straight up – many tours allow both in one stop.

Gili Lawa means “rat island” in local dialect, due to the shape of its hills. Historically, it was used only as a campsite by fishermen. Today, it is part of Komodo National Park and is known purely for its scenic beauty. There is no village here – just a ranger post – so it feels wonderfully isolated.
