KELOR ISLAND
Ancient sailors called it "The Guardian." Dutch colonials built watchtowers on its crown. Local legend says it's a giant sea turtle turned to stone. A 20-minute climb rewards you with 360° views of dragon territories. The coral gardens below hide patrolling sea turtles in crystal shallows.
MANJERITE
Every sunset, tens of thousands of flying foxes launch from mangroves, creating a black river across orange skies. Ancient sea nomads believed these bats carried souls to the afterlife. Watch from your deck at 17:30. The sky will erupt. You'll forget to breathe.
PADAR ISLAND
Three crescent bays—turquoise, cobalt, jade—curve around dragon-spine ridges. Legend says a dragon princess died here protecting her brothers. Her body became the ridgeline. Her tears became three seas. The 30-minute climb is ruthless, but every explorer says: "I can die now."
PINK BEACH
One of only seven pink beaches on Earth. Microscopic red coral creates a rose-gold blush. Sailors once feared it was cursed by dragon blood. The reef drops from knee-deep to 50 meters—turtles, reef sharks, and octopi patrol waters so clear you'll think you're dreaming.
KOMODO ISLAND
Ground zero. The throne. Komodo dragons—largest lizards on Earth, unchanged for 4 million years. They sprint 20 km/h, kill with venom-laced bites. Trek with armed rangers. Watch them sun like kings. Feel evolution stare back. This isn't a zoo. It's their Kingdom
TAKA MAKASSAR
A sandbar that emerges at low tide, then disappears beneath waves. Sea nomads called it "Ghost Island"—a resting place for ocean spirits. Stand in the middle of the ocean with ankle-deep water. Snorkel where the island vanishes. Your private Maldives, but only for 2 hours.
MANTA POINT
A submerged pinnacle where currents collide, creating a cleaning station for manta rays with 7-meter wingspans. Divers call them "Royal Stingrays"—reincarnated ocean kings. The taboo: look, never touch. Watch them barrel-roll beneath you. Swimming with mantas IS your bucket list.
GILI LAWA
Twin islands—Lawa Darat and Lawa Laut—frame the golden highway between sky and sea. Ancient traders navigated by these peaks. At sunrise, watch the world ignite from savannah ridges. At sunset, the sky bleeds into three shades of fire. The 30-minute trek is steep, but the 360° view makes kings jealous.
SLABA ISLAND
Slaba rises like a fortress from deep blue—a volcanic dome crowned with savannah where white-bellied sea eagles hunt. Bajo fishermen call it "Pulau Rajawali" (Eagle Island), believing the birds are guardians of hidden treasures below. Dive the walls where currents deliver big fish, sharks, and swirling barracuda. Above: eagles. Below: an underwater avalanche of life.
SEBAYUR ISLAND
Sebayur guards one of Komodo's best-kept secrets: untouched coral gardens teeming with life. While others chase dragons, divers chase legends here—pygmy seahorses, ghost pipefishes, and macro critters hiding in soft coral forests. The bay is a natural aquarium. The hillside trek offers sunrise views without the Padar crowds.
KANAWA ISLAND
While crowds chase Pink Beach, explorers slip to Kanawa—pristine coral reefs, zero crowds. Fishermen once avoided it, believing the Sea Goddess protected these waters. The reef here is 80% live coral. Turtles nest on beaches. Blacktip sharks patrol shallows. This is the Komodo nobody talks about.
SABOLO ISLAND (RANGKO CAVE)
Hidden in Sabolo's limestone cliffs lies Rangko Cave—a saltwater cavern illuminated by a ceiling skylight. Sunbeams pierce the darkness, turning water neon blue. Local legend says bathing here grants courage to face dragons. Swim through the entrance tunnel. Surface inside the cathedral. Float in liquid sapphire while light dances on ancient rock.
BIDADARI ISLAND
Bidadari" means angel in Indonesian. One glance explains why. Powdery white sand. Turquoise shallows. Zero crowds. Fishermen say angels rest here between monsoons, leaving footprints in the sand that waves erase by dawn. Snorkel the fringing reef where baby blacktips patrol. This is your castaway fantasy—pristine, peaceful, perfect.

The Blackbeard Phinisi struck the perfect balance between adventure and ease. As someone who travels frequently for work, I needed a true disconnect—and this delivered. Sailing from Sebayur Island to Wae Rebo, the crew anticipated needs without hovering. The Master Suite’s teak finishes and private deck made mornings with coffee feel quietly decadent. Snorkeling at Manta Point was transcendent; gliding alongside those gentle giants at sunrise, the water like liquid glass. The dive team was attentive but never overbearing. One small note: the Wi-Fi was spotty, but honestly, that was part of the charm. Our group of six friends appreciated how the yacht’s layout allowed both intimacy and space—dinners under the stars with local spices woven into each course were highlights. The attention to detail, like chilled towels after hikes and perfectly timed sundowners, showed a level of service that’s rare. Wish we’d booked an extra day to linger at Wainilu’s hidden cove.

The Blackbeard Phinisi is the rare vessel that feels both modern and deeply rooted in maritime tradition. I joined for a photography expedition with three colleagues, focusing on Castle Rock’s pelagic zones and the arid slopes of Padar Island. The yacht’s stability made long lens work feasible even in rolling swells. We were given a dedicated dry storage area for equipment, and the dive platform doubled as a staging zone. At sunrise, the captain held position off Padar’s eastern face—perfect for capturing the play of light on eroded strata. Evenings were spent editing in the climate-controlled saloon, with espresso and dark chocolate within reach. The Standard Cabin had excellent ventilation and a reading lamp with adjustable warmth. Only thought: more USB-C ports would future-proof the cabins. Still, this is benchmark-level execution.

The Blackbeard Phinisi offered a quiet elegance that matched the Komodo landscape perfectly. We chartered for a friends getaway—five of us seeking clarity and sea—and found both in abundance. The Master Suite was spacious without being ostentatious; teak finishes, soft linen, and floor-to-ceiling views of Wainilu at dawn made waking early worthwhile. Days were spent snorkeling at Crystal Rock, where the current carried us gently over coral gardens teeming with pygmy seahorses and reef sharks. Kanawa’s sandbar was ideal for late afternoon swims, the water so clear it felt like floating in light. The crew anticipated needs without intrusion—chilled towels after hikes, perfectly timed sundowners. Only critique: the Wi-Fi was spotty past Castle Rock, though I can’t say we missed it much. It’s rare to find a vessel that balances adventure and refinement so seamlessly. The galley’s miso-glazed eggplant still lingers in memory.

Men Blackbeard Phinisi overrasket. Eneste wish: litt mer aktivitetstid i Kalong.
