Sailing the Komodo waters aboard Derya Liveaboard felt like stepping into a carefully composed narrative of sea, fire, and wind. Our photography expedition focused on the interplay of light at Taka Makassar and the ochre cliffs of Rinca Island—both yielded extraordinary frames. The Master Suite’s teak finishes and quiet positioning amidships made post-dive editing a meditative pleasure. The crew anticipated needs without intrusion, though the satellite internet was barely functional—manageable, given we were there to disconnect. What stood out was the precision of dive briefings; the captain timed our arrival at Castle Rock to the minute, catching the current at its peak for optimal drift. One evening, anchored off Wainilu, the sky turned violet and the staff arranged a private beachside dinner with local spiced tuna tartare. I’d have welcomed another night there—time dilates in these parts. Derya doesn’t shout luxury; it lives it quietly, with competence.
