About Derya Liveaboard

Derya Liveaboard is equipped for a specific and demanding photographic pursuit: macro diving in Komodo's muck sites, where millimeter-scale subjects require hours of patient observation and equipment that handles the humidity and salt of a working dive boat without complaint. The vessel carries a dedicated digital darkroom and individual battery-charging stations for underwater camera systems — infrastructure that most liveaboards treat as an afterthought — making Derya the default choice for underwater photographers who have arrived with serious gear and serious intentions. At 22 meters, built from ironwood and teak with a crew of five, the vessel accommodates up to thirteen guests in an atmosphere that tilts toward the focused and professional rather than the festive. VHF and Wi-Fi maintain connectivity between dive sessions, and the Mitsubishi engine keeps the boat on schedule. KomodoExplorer Indonesia places Derya Liveaboard among its most specialized charter offerings for underwater photographers who regard their work in the water as the primary purpose of the entire journey.

Destination Highlights

Explore the magical islands you will visit aboard Derya Liveaboard. Each stop offers a unique adventure from pink beaches to dragon encounters.

EVERY TERRITORY TELLS — A LEGEND ◈EVERY TERRITORY TELLS — A LEGEND ◈EVERY TERRITORY TELLS — A LEGEND ◈EVERY TERRITORY TELLS — A LEGEND ◈EVERY TERRITORY TELLS — A LEGEND ◈EVERY TERRITORY TELLS — A LEGEND ◈EVERY TERRITORY TELLS — A LEGEND ◈EVERY TERRITORY TELLS — A LEGEND ◈EVERY TERRITORY TELLS — A LEGEND ◈EVERY TERRITORY TELLS — A LEGEND ◈
◈

KELOR ISLAND

Ancient sailors called it "The Guardian." Dutch colonials built watchtowers on its crown. Local legend says it's a giant sea turtle turned to stone. A 20-minute climb rewards you with 360° views of dragon territories. The coral gardens below hide patrolling sea turtles in crystal shallows.

◈

MANJERITE

Every sunset, tens of thousands of flying foxes launch from mangroves, creating a black river across orange skies. Ancient sea nomads believed these bats carried souls to the afterlife. Watch from your deck at 17:30. The sky will erupt. You'll forget to breathe.

◈

PADAR ISLAND

Three crescent bays—turquoise, cobalt, jade—curve around dragon-spine ridges. Legend says a dragon princess died here protecting her brothers. Her body became the ridgeline. Her tears became three seas. The 30-minute climb is ruthless, but every explorer says: "I can die now."

◈

PINK BEACH

One of only seven pink beaches on Earth. Microscopic red coral creates a rose-gold blush. Sailors once feared it was cursed by dragon blood. The reef drops from knee-deep to 50 meters—turtles, reef sharks, and octopi patrol waters so clear you'll think you're dreaming.

◈

KOMODO ISLAND

Ground zero. The throne. Komodo dragons—largest lizards on Earth, unchanged for 4 million years. They sprint 20 km/h, kill with venom-laced bites. Trek with armed rangers. Watch them sun like kings. Feel evolution stare back. This isn't a zoo. It's their Kingdom

◈

TAKA MAKASSAR

A sandbar that emerges at low tide, then disappears beneath waves. Sea nomads called it "Ghost Island"—a resting place for ocean spirits. Stand in the middle of the ocean with ankle-deep water. Snorkel where the island vanishes. Your private Maldives, but only for 2 hours.

◈

MANTA POINT

A submerged pinnacle where currents collide, creating a cleaning station for manta rays with 7-meter wingspans. Divers call them "Royal Stingrays"—reincarnated ocean kings. The taboo: look, never touch. Watch them barrel-roll beneath you. Swimming with mantas IS your bucket list.

◈

GILI LAWA

Twin islands—Lawa Darat and Lawa Laut—frame the golden highway between sky and sea. Ancient traders navigated by these peaks. At sunrise, watch the world ignite from savannah ridges. At sunset, the sky bleeds into three shades of fire. The 30-minute trek is steep, but the 360° view makes kings jealous.

◈

SLABA ISLAND

Slaba rises like a fortress from deep blue—a volcanic dome crowned with savannah where white-bellied sea eagles hunt. Bajo fishermen call it "Pulau Rajawali" (Eagle Island), believing the birds are guardians of hidden treasures below. Dive the walls where currents deliver big fish, sharks, and swirling barracuda. Above: eagles. Below: an underwater avalanche of life.

◈

SEBAYUR ISLAND

Sebayur guards one of Komodo's best-kept secrets: untouched coral gardens teeming with life. While others chase dragons, divers chase legends here—pygmy seahorses, ghost pipefishes, and macro critters hiding in soft coral forests. The bay is a natural aquarium. The hillside trek offers sunrise views without the Padar crowds.

◈

KANAWA ISLAND

While crowds chase Pink Beach, explorers slip to Kanawa—pristine coral reefs, zero crowds. Fishermen once avoided it, believing the Sea Goddess protected these waters. The reef here is 80% live coral. Turtles nest on beaches. Blacktip sharks patrol shallows. This is the Komodo nobody talks about.

◈

SABOLO ISLAND (RANGKO CAVE)

Hidden in Sabolo's limestone cliffs lies Rangko Cave—a saltwater cavern illuminated by a ceiling skylight. Sunbeams pierce the darkness, turning water neon blue. Local legend says bathing here grants courage to face dragons. Swim through the entrance tunnel. Surface inside the cathedral. Float in liquid sapphire while light dances on ancient rock.

◈

BIDADARI ISLAND

Bidadari" means angel in Indonesian. One glance explains why. Powdery white sand. Turquoise shallows. Zero crowds. Fishermen say angels rest here between monsoons, leaving footprints in the sand that waves erase by dawn. Snorkel the fringing reef where baby blacktips patrol. This is your castaway fantasy—pristine, peaceful, perfect.

komodo.explorer Bidadari" means angel in Indonesian. #bidadariisland #paradise #turquoise

Honeymoon in Komodo’s Embrace

Our honeymoon on Derya Liveaboard was understated perfection. We arrived with no expectations beyond quiet and beauty—both were in abundance. The Standard Cabin was serene: soft linen, a rain shower that never lost pressure, and blackout curtains that made late mornings guiltless. Days unfolded gently—snorkeling at Manta Point where two juveniles circled our group, then a beachside lunch on Pink Beach with grilled squid and lime. One evening, anchored near Loh Liang, the staff set up a private dinner on the upper deck. No music, just the hull creaking softly and the scent of frangipani from a nearby shore. The boat’s size—only four cabins—meant we never felt crowded, even with a full booking. One afternoon, the generator failed briefly—resolved within an hour. It didn’t disrupt, just reminded us we were in the wild. That’s the kind of authenticity money can’t fabricate.

Elegance on the Edge of Wilderness

Sailing the Komodo waters aboard Derya Liveaboard felt like stepping into a carefully composed narrative of sea, fire, and wind. Our photography expedition focused on the interplay of light at Taka Makassar and the ochre cliffs of Rinca Island—both yielded extraordinary frames. The Master Suite’s teak finishes and quiet positioning amidships made post-dive editing a meditative pleasure. The crew anticipated needs without intrusion, though the satellite internet was barely functional—manageable, given we were there to disconnect. What stood out was the precision of dive briefings; the captain timed our arrival at Castle Rock to the minute, catching the current at its peak for optimal drift. One evening, anchored off Wainilu, the sky turned violet and the staff arranged a private beachside dinner with local spiced tuna tartare. I’d have welcomed another night there—time dilates in these parts. Derya doesn’t shout luxury; it lives it quietly, with competence.

Diving Beyond Expectation

I joined Derya Liveaboard with a seasoned dive group from Sydney, all of us chasing strong currents and pelagics. The boat’s stability made repetitive entries seamless, especially at Taka Makassar where the thermocline dropped sharply—we saw hammerheads at 38 meters, clean and fast. The dive deck is well laid out, with individual gear lockers and rinse tanks that don’t feel like an afterthought. Cabins are compact but intelligent in layout; I had the Master Suite and appreciated the sound insulation from the engine room. What surprised me was the culinary consistency—three full meals a day, all with regional ingredients, even on day three when we were far from resupply. One evening, we debated whether the turmeric-spiced snapper was better than the Balinese-style tuna. No clear winner. Only a minor hiccup: our itinerary missed Nusa Kode due to a sudden swell, rerouted to a sheltered cove near Komodo village. Still exceptional.

Derya

Zeker. We voelden ons pas op dag drie echt losgekoppeld.

Pure duiklux in Komodo
