Guided park rangers lead short treks into the dragon habitat, where you can observe these massive lizards in the wild. Komodo Island is home to the majority of the park’s dragon population. • Diverse Wildlife: Besides dragons, you may spot wild deer, buffalo, and wild pigs – all part of the Komodo ecosystem. Native birds and colorful butterflies add to the wildlife experience. • Pink Beach (Pantai Merah): On the south side of the island lies the famous Pink Beach, named for its soft rosy sand. It’s one of the only pink sand beaches in the world and is perfect for snorkeling in its turquoise waters. • Scenic Vistas: Komodo Island’s hills offer spectacular views of the surrounding islands and sea. A hike to the top of one of the peaks rewards you with panoramic vistas of emerald bays and rugged coastlines.

• Dragon Trek: With a park ranger, hike a marked trail to search for Komodo dragons. These treks are thrilling but require caution: always keep a safe distance and follow the guide’s directions. The guide carries a long stick to help manage the dragons if needed. • Photography: Getting a photo of a dragon from a safe distance is a thrill. Use a zoom lens if possible. Also capture the island’s dramatic scenery and the contrasting colors of its bays. • Snorkeling: Many tours include snorkeling stops near Komodo Island. Vibrant coral reefs and calm coves make for excellent underwater exploration. Look for reef fish, turtles, and maybe a friendly manta ray. • Beach Relaxation: After trekking, unwind on Pantai Merah’s warm pink sands. The gentle slope and clear water here are perfect for a refreshing swim. • Hiking: In addition to the dragon trail, more challenging hikes lead to high viewpoints. If time allows, ask about longer trail options for a workout and more wildlife viewing.

The dry season (April–October) is ideal for Komodo Island. Dragons are most active in the cooler morning and late afternoon hours, so plan a trek early in the day. The ocean is also calmest then for snorkeling. If possible, avoid midday for the hike as it can get hot. The rainy season (December–March) brings muddy trails and occasional park closures. For photography, morning and late-afternoon light enhance the island’s vistas.

Komodo Island is only accessible by boat from Labuan Bajo. It’s roughly a 1–2 hour ride, depending on the boat. Most day tours and multi-day cruises include Komodo Island on their itinerary. Boats typically drop visitors at the park’s main ranger station (Loh Liang). Park fees and ranger guides are provided at this entry. After the trek and any snorkeling, boats will pick you up again to continue the tour.

• Proper Gear: Wear sturdy shoes and long pants for the trek to protect your legs. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat. • Safety First: Always stay with your guide. Komodo dragons can be dangerous if provoked, so follow all instructions. Never run or make sudden movements around them. • Respect Park Rules: Don’t litter or disturb wildlife. Stay on paths, and don’t feed the dragons. • Combine Visits: Komodo Island is often visited with Rinca Island on the same tour. Check if you can do both if time allows. • Permits: Park entrance fees apply; ensure your tour includes these. Foreign visitors pay a higher fee, so have your passport handy. • Cultural Note: The Komodo people live nearby. If visiting Komodo Village, be polite, and ask before taking photos. • No Overnight: You cannot stay overnight on Komodo Island. Plan to return to Labuan Bajo or stay on a liveaboard after your visit.

Komodo Island is named for the Komodo dragon itself. It became part of Komodo National Park when the park was established in 1980, and was recognized by UNESCO in 1991 for its unique wildlife. The island has a small native community living in Komodo Village. While dragons are the main attraction, the island’s rich marine life (part of the Coral Triangle) adds to its global ecological importance.
