• Sunset Bat Watching: Plan to arrive at Kalong about 30 minutes before sunset. Settle in on your boat or find a spot on the shore. As the sun dips, the first bats will stir and emerge from the trees. Soon the sky will be alive with their motion – a truly breathtaking spectacle. • Photography: Bring a camera with a zoom. Capture the amazing scene of swirling bats against the orange and purple sky. Even a smartphone can snag cool silhouette shots, but steady your hands (a small tripod on deck helps). • Morning Return: If your tour allows, you may also see the reverse in the morning: bats streaming back to roost. It’s quieter and equally fascinating as they return in broad daylight. • Boat Cruise: Many Komodo tours time Kalong’s visit as a sunset highlight on the way back from the islands. Enjoy drinks on deck and relax – it’s a magical way to end a day of adventure. • Nature Stroll (if possible): Occasionally, a dry path leads a short way into the mangroves. Though rare, a quick walk can let you experience the island’s interior, with bats roosting overhead. Don’t stray far, though; the bats are the true stars.

The bat flight happens daily, year-round. The best viewing conditions are in the dry season (April–October) when skies are clear. Plan to arrive at Kalong at least half an hour before sunset on your chosen day. On cloudy or rainy nights, the bats will still fly but might be harder to spot. Generally, weekdays see fewer boats than weekends, so try to pick a quieter day if possible.

Kalong Island is about 8 kilometers (roughly 20–30 minutes by boat) north of Labuan Bajo. The only way to reach it is by boat – either a public Komodo tour or a private charter. Many tours that visit nearby Komodo or Padar will stop at Kalong at dusk. Boats usually anchor offshore or come alongside a sandy bank. There is no formal dock; guests typically stay on the boat or wade ashore in shallow water.

Otherwise, just enjoy watching with your eyes. • Mosquito Repellent: Mangrove areas can have mosquitoes, especially at dusk. Bring repellent and consider wearing long sleeves/pants to ward off bites. • Stay on Boat: Unless your tour allows a quick wade to shore, it’s best to watch from the boat deck. The island itself is best viewed from the water. • Follow Boat Crew: Listen to your captain and crew for timing. Boats often coordinate positions to give everyone a great view. Switch off bright lights on deck when the bats start flying. • No Wildlife Contact: Never try to touch or feed the bats. They are wild animals focused on feeding. • Dress Warmly: It can get cooler in the evening breeze on open water. A light jacket or sarong may be welcome after sunset. • Combine Stops: Kalong is often combined with other nearby sites (Komodo Island or Padar) on multi-day trips. If visiting via liveaboard, ensure your itinerary includes this magical stop.

Kalong means “flying fox” in the local language. The island long served as a roosting site for bats, but only recently has it become famous among tourists. Komodo boat operators started including it in their itineraries specifically for the bat show at sunset. This nightly exodus is very rare to see elsewhere, making Kalong a special bonus on any Komodo trip.
